[[Art Conversations]] — annual intent --- ## Session log ### June 11 — Seascape 1 (Jo — Gathering) First monoprint session of the restart. Reacquainting with Akua ink. Broad dark washes, one stark anchor element. Stillness, ambiguity. Scratchy marks beginning to emerge. ### June 13 — Seascape 2 (Ho — Exploration) Tried to add more intent, aiming toward [[Mid Sea & Cloud.jpg]] reference. Result felt too bare — wanted more fullness, more blending. Scratchy marks are interesting but composition didn't land. Key question emerged: am I chasing the AI reference rather than following my own style? **Lesson:** Don't try to replicate the Midjourney image. Go deeper into what the scratchy marks are offering. ### June 18 — Digital interlude iPad painting on the train felt stifled — didn't know what I was doing. But two styles felt right: the esoteric map style ([[Esoteric map inspired by poetry of I_hear_the_Earth.jpg]]) and the bold graphic mountain style ([[Mountains_Sunset_August.jpg]]). **Insight:** Separate digital painting (made-up pretty landscapes) from physical work (map-inspired, abstract, mark-making). One is imagination, the other is process. ### June 19 — Rock and Moon (still Ho, moving toward Kyū) Ink style, letting randomness in. Map Art style. Only 1 hour but felt something forming — new ideas coming. The akua ink water effects are pulling me. **Key insight:** I like the water with the akua ink effects — want to experiment more. The work is finding its own direction away from the AI reference. The tension between wanting "fullness" and the bareness the ink naturally produces is the creative friction right now. **Practical:** How to store these works? Maybe dedicate a drawer just for this line of work. --- ## What's emerging The work is converging on something: scratchy marks from Seascape 2, map-style approach from June 18, and "let randomness in" from today. The akua ink water effects are the main pull. The Rock and Moon piece is rough but feels alive — it's moving from forced toward surrendered. The AI reference ([[Mid Sea & Cloud.jpg]]) served its purpose as a compositional starting point. The work is now finding its own voice through the material — the ink bleed, the scraped texture, the bareness. ## Current focus Akua ink monoprint. Following the water effects and scratchy marks. Map Art style. Letting the work take shape from the work. ## Tomorrow's session — June 20 **Focus:** Akua ink water effects + scratchy marks. Deepen, don't fill. **Intention:** Yesterday you felt something forming but needed more time. Today, give yourself the time. The work is pulling toward the water effects — the akua ink bleed, the randomness, the Map Art style. Don't try to make it "full" or finished. Lean into the bareness. **What to try:** - Start with the water effects you liked yesterday — let the akua ink do what it wants on the surface - Layer scratchy marks over the wet wash (or into it, before it dries — experiment with both) - Map Art style: think about the esoteric map approach, not a seascape you're trying to depict. Let geography emerge from the marks, not from a picture in your head - If you feel the urge to fill it in, stop. The bareness is the thing. The scratchy marks against dark wash is the language this work is speaking right now - Store the pieces as they come — dedicate a space/drawer for this line of work so nothing gets lost **What not to do:** - Don't reach for the AI reference image again. It served its purpose. - Don't switch to oils yet. The ink is speaking; give it room. - Don't make it "full." The tension between dark wash and bare paper is where the energy lives. **Phase:** Ho moving toward Kyū. Something is declaring itself.
