#Resource We move beyond our regressive directions because we have ‘evolved’ beyond them - eg an 8 no longer needs the thinking of a 5, The 3 reactive types of the 3 harmonic triads are the 4, 6 and 8. Enneagram The Enneagram is a personality system that describes nine distinct types, each with its own core motivations, fears, and worldview. While Enneagram 1s are often associated with rationality/pragmatism (Perfectionists) and 2s with relationships/helping (Helpers), here’s a simplified breakdown of what the other seven types "typify" or emphasize: ### **Enneagram 3 – The Achiever** **Typifies:** Success, ambition, image, and productivity. 3s are driven by accomplishment and being admired for their competence. They often embody adaptability and efficiency. ### **Enneagram 4 – The Individualist** **Typifies:** Identity, authenticity, depth, and emotional uniqueness. 4s focus on self-expression, beauty, and the search for meaning, often feeling different from others. ### **Enneagram 5 – The Investigator** **Typifies:** Knowledge, independence, and understanding. 5s seek mastery and autonomy, valuing logic and conserving energy/resources. They often withdraw to analyze the world. ### **Enneagram 6 – The Loyalist** **Typifies:** Security, loyalty, and preparedness. 6s are vigilant about risks, seek trustworthy systems/people, and can be either cautious or rebellious against perceived threats. ### **Enneagram 7 – The Enthusiast** **Typifies:** Freedom, joy, and possibilities. 7s avoid pain by staying optimistic, seeking new experiences, and reframing limitations into opportunities. ### **Enneagram 8 – The Challenger** **Typifies:** Power, control, and strength. 8s assert dominance, resist vulnerability, and protect themselves/others through directness and intensity. ### **Enneagram 9 – The Peacemaker** **Typifies:** Harmony, comfort, and avoidance of conflict. 9s prioritize inner/outer peace, often merging with others’ needs to maintain stability. Each type has healthy and unhealthy expressions, but these are the core themes they gravitate toward. Type 4s (The Individualist/Romantic) often activate during crises Here’s why: 4s are already wired for emotional intensity. Their baseline orientation is toward deep feeling, meaning-making, and authenticity. Most of everyday life — routine, small talk, mundane tasks — feels flat or alienating to them. A crisis, paradoxically, matches their internal emotional register. Type 4s are meaning-seekers. They rehearse loss. 4s have a peculiar relationship with melancholy and longing; they’re no strangers to sitting with pain. When others are overwhelmed by suffering, 4s often find they have prior experience navigating it. ∙ Ordinariness disappears. The banal, which 4s find draining, evaporates in a crisis. Life becomes dramatic, urgent, and singular — which aligns with the 4’s core longing to experience life as significant. Better Wording Rather than “come alive,” it might be more precise to say: Type 4s feel less alienated during crises, because the external world finally mirrors their internal one. Or: the world “catches up” to the emotional intensity they already carry. The Shadow Side It’s worth noting that some 4s can unconsciously romanticise suffering or crisis, which is a less healthy expression of this same trait — mistaking intensity for meaning, or feeling oddly lost once the crisis resolves and ordinariness returns. So yes — true, but the mechanism is less about crisis energising them and more about crisis removing the friction they normally feel in everyday life. How a type 4 can move to a 1 type when discussing politics and social issues.. Because a 1 makes a good teacher. Analytical and factual - rectifying injustice- how this can be beneficial without hampering a 4 in other areas of life.
