You connect the WiiM Ultra to the internet using the WiiM Home app via Wi-Fi or by plugging in an Ethernet cable. Radio functions entirely over the internet, giving you access to tens of thousands of global and local stations without needing an aerial. [1, 2, 3]
Here is exactly how to get your [WiiM Ultra](https://wiimhome.com/wiimultra/overview) online and playing the radio.
## 1. How to Connect to the Internet
You can get the WiiM Ultra online using one of two methods: [1, 4]
* Option A: Wired Ethernet (Recommended for Stability)
* Plug an Ethernet cable from your home router directly into the LAN port on the back of the WiiM Ultra.
* The device automatically configures itself and connects to the internet. It will bypass Wi-Fi entirely. [2, 5, 6]
* Option B: Wireless Wi-Fi
* Plug the WiiM Ultra into power. The front touch screen will light up, and the unit will enter setup mode.
* Download the WiiM Home App on your smartphone or tablet (available on iOS and Android).
* Make sure your phone’s Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are turned on, and that your phone is connected to your home network.
* Open the WiiM Home app. A prompt stating "Set Up [Device Name]" will automatically pop up.
* Tap Set Up and enter your home Wi-Fi password when prompted. [1, 2, 7, 8, 9, 10]
## 2. How Radio Works on the WiiM Ultra
Because the WiiM Ultra is a digital streamer, it does not use traditional FM/AM or DAB airwaves. Instead, it streams Internet Radio, which provides much cleaner, static-free sound. [3, 11, 12, 13]
Once your device is connected to the internet, you can access radio in three ways:
* Built-in Radio Directories: Inside the Browse tab of the WiiM Home app, you will see pre-installed, free radio aggregates like TuneIn, vTuner, iHeartRadio, and Radio Paradise. You can search for local UK stations (like BBC, Heart, or Absolute) or any international station by genre, country, or name. [3, 11, 14, 15]
* The Front Touch Screen: You can browse and select your favourite radio stations directly from the physical screen on the front of the WiiM Ultra without even opening your phone. [4, 8]
* Custom Streams: If a niche station isn't listed, you can use the Open Network Stream feature in the app to paste in a direct stream URL link. [3, 11]
## Quick Tip: Setting Radio Presets
The WiiM Ultra features Preset capabilities. When you find a radio station you love in the app, you can save it as a preset (e.g., Preset 1, Preset 2). Once saved, you can launch that station instantly using the WiiM voice remote or by tapping the front touch screen without needing to look at your phone. [4, 7, 8, 16]
If you want, tell me:
* Whether your WiiM Ultra sits close enough to your router to use an Ethernet cable.
* Your favourite radio stations, so I can verify the best way to access them.
I can walk you through saving your very first preset station!

## Saving BBC Stations via the Front Touch Screen
You can set up your favourite BBC stations for quick, phone-free playback using the WiiM Ultra's front touch screen. Because searching for a station from scratch is difficult on a small display, you must first find the station on your phone, then lock it into a preset slot on the screen. [1]
Step 1: Set the Preset on your Phone
1. Open the WiiM Home App on your phone.
2. Go to the Browse tab and select TuneIn or vTuner.
3. Search for BBC Radio 4 (or 5 Live, or 6 Music) and play it.
4. On the "Now Playing" screen in the app, tap the three dots (...) next to the station name.
5. Tap Preset, and assign it to a number slot (for example, Preset 1 for Radio 4, Preset 2 for Radio 5, Preset 3 for Radio 6). [2, 3]
Step 2: Accessing Them on the Front Touch Screen
1. Walk up to your WiiM Ultra and wake up the screen by tapping it.
2. Swipe left or right on the screen until you see the Presets Menu widget.
3. You will see your numbered slots (1, 2, 3) with the BBC station logos or names.
4. Simply tap Preset 1 directly on the glass, and BBC Radio 4 will instantly start playing over your Wi-Fi without you ever touching your phone. [4]

## How to Record Internet Radio Using an External Device
While the WiiM Ultra cannot record audio onto its own connected SSD, you can use its hardware to output the radio signal into a separate recording device.
Because the WiiM Ultra plays the internet radio stream over Wi-Fi, it converts that digital data into a physical audio signal. You can capture this signal by routing cables from the back of the WiiM Ultra into an external recorder. [5]
## Option A: Recording to a Standalone Digital Audio Recorder (Easiest)
You can buy a portable digital recorder (like a Tascam DR-05X or Zoom H1n) on eBay.
1. Connect an RCA-to-3.5mm cable from the Line Out ports on the back of the WiiM Ultra to the Line In / Mic port of the portable recorder.
2. Start playing BBC Radio 6 Music on your WiiM.
3. Hit the physical Record button on the Zoom/Tascam device. It will save the radio broadcast perfectly as a WAV or MP3 file onto a MicroSD card inside the recorder. You can later transfer these files to your main SSD drive.
## Option B: Recording to a Laptop or PC
If you have a computer nearby, you can use it as your recording deck.
1. Run a cable from the WiiM Ultra's Line Out into your computer's Line In or microphone port (or use a cheap USB Audio Interface if your laptop lacks a dedicated mic port).
2. Download a free audio recording software program like Audacity onto your computer.
3. Set Audacity's input source to your computer's line-in port, press the red Record button in the software, and play your radio station on the WiiM. [6]
If you want, tell me:
* Do you already own a laptop or any audio recording equipment?
* Would you like a recommendation for a budget-friendly Tascam or Zoom recorder model to look for on eBay?
I can help you find the most cost-effective hardware to get your recording setup running!
