Masereel's woodcut series, mainly of sociocritical content and [expressionistic](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Expressionistic "Expressionistic") in form, made Masereel internationally known. Among them were the [wordless novels](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wordless_novel "Wordless novel") _[25 Images of a Man's Passion](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/25_Images_of_a_Man%27s_Passion "25 Images of a Man's Passion")_ (1918), _[Passionate Journey](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Passionate_Journey "Passionate Journey")_ (1919), _[The Sun](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Sun_(wordless_novel) "The Sun (wordless novel)")_ (1919), _[The Idea](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Idea_(book) "The Idea (book)")_ (1920), _[Story Without Words](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Story_Without_Words "Story Without Words")_ (1920), and _[Landscapes and Voices](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Landscapes_and_Voices&action=edit&redlink=1 "Landscapes and Voices (page does not exist)")_ (1929). At that time Masereel also drew illustrations for famous works of world literature by [Thomas Mann](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Mann "Thomas Mann"), [Émile Zola](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%89mile_Zola "Émile Zola"), and [Stefan Zweig](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stefan_Zweig "Stefan Zweig"). He also produced a series of illustrations for the classic _[Legend of Thyl Ulenspiegel and Lamme Goedzak](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Legend_of_Thyl_Ulenspiegel_and_Lamme_Goedzak "The Legend of Thyl Ulenspiegel and Lamme Goedzak")_ by his fellow Belgian [Charles De Coster](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_De_Coster "Charles De Coster"); these illustrations followed the book in its translations to numerous languages.
