## A quick standing reminder, inspired by Esther Gokhale's *inner corset* (Lesson 5) and *tallstanding* (Lesson 6). Not a workout — a 5-second cue you can run any time you notice yourself slumping. --- ## The Cue 1. **Stand still and soft.** Feet under hips, knees unlocked, shoulders rolled gently back. 2. **Inhale slowly through the nose** — let the breath fill the chest *and* the back, ribs widening sideways. 3. **As the air comes in, grow taller.** Picture the ribs lifting away from the pelvis and the crown of the head floating upwards — as though the breath itself is pumping the spine longer. 4. **Hold the height as you exhale.** Don't collapse back down. Let the body settle into the new length, exhaling without arching the lower back. One breath. Five seconds. Repeat whenever you catch yourself slouched. --- ## Why it works - **Breathing as spinal massage.** Gokhale teaches that a correctly placed inhalation gently decompresses the spinal discs — each breath becomes a small traction event for the spine, hydrating and stretching it throughout the day. - **The inner corset.** Lifting taller on the inhale recruits the deep abdominal and back muscles that make up the *inner corset*, so the height is supported from within rather than held by tense surface muscles. - **Diaphragm as postural stabiliser.** The diaphragm attaches to both the rib cage and the spine — diaphragmatic breathing therefore primes the deep core and reinforces an upright frame as a side-effect of the breath itself. --- ## Watch-outs - **Don't arch the lower back** to make yourself taller — the lift comes from *elongation*, not extension. Gokhale specifically warns against this. - **Keep the chin slightly tucked** rather than letting it tip forward as the chest rises. - **Don't grip on the exhale** — release the muscular effort but keep the height. --- ## Sources - [[8 Steps to a Pain-Free Back]] — Lesson 5 (Using your inner corset), Lesson 6 (Tallstanding) - [Breathing as Spinal Massage — Gokhale Method Institute](https://gokhalemethod.com/blog/63889) - [Breathing as Spinal Massage / Positive Stance — Gokhale Method Institute](https://gokhalemethod.com/breathing_spinal_massage_positive_stance) - [Improve Posture and Reduce Back Pain with a Quick Breathing Exercise — LI Spine](https://lispine.com/blog/improve-posture-and-reduce-back-pain-with-a-quick-breathing-exercise/) - [The Power of Diaphragmatic Breathing — Simon Jarvis](https://www.simonjarvismovementspecialist.com/new-blog-4/2024/3/1/the-power-of-diaphragmatic-breathing-unlocking-posture-core-strength-and-spinal-health) - [The Effect of Posture on the Diaphragm — Physiopedia](https://www.physio-pedia.com/The_Effect_of_Posture_on_the_Diaphragm)
