Positive emotions — joy, interest, contentment, gratitude, awe, love among them — are not simply the pleasant end of the same scale as negative ones. In Barbara Fredrickson's broaden-and-build theory they work differently from negative emotions rather than being their mirror image. # Broaden and build Negative emotions narrow: fear funnels attention toward the threat, anger toward the obstacle, each carrying a specific action tendency (fight, flee, expel). Positive emotions do the opposite — they broaden the thought-action repertoire. In a good mood, attention widens, more of the field stays in play, thinking becomes more flexible and associative, and connections appear that the narrowed mind would not find. Over time this broadening builds lasting resources: intellectual (wider attention and play build skills), social (positive feeling builds bonds), physical, and psychological (resilience, optimism). The two movements together give the theory its name — positive emotion broadens in the moment and builds across time, which is why Fredrickson describes an upward spiral rather than a simple mood lift. This is why the energised, good-mood painting session produces work that deliberate planning cannot: the widened field takes in more of the canvas, and a risky mark registers as possible rather than reckless. The broadening is not a reward for good work; it is a change in what the mind can reach. # Cautions One famous claim from this research programme — the Lorenz-like ratio suggesting a fixed tipping point of about three positive emotions to every negative one for flourishing — collapsed in 2013 when the underlying mathematics was shown to be unfounded. The broaden-and-build findings themselves survived; the magic number did not. The theory also has no bearing on forcing emotions: manufactured positivity is suppression wearing a smile, and the evidence gives it no broaden-and-build credit. The state works only when it is real, which is another way of saying it cannot be scheduled — only invited, and recognised when it arrives. --- **Concepts:** [[Affect]] · [[Emotions]] · [[Flow]] · [[Happiness islands]] **Knowledge Base:** [[Barbara Fredrickson]] · [[Spontaneity]]
